New name and location for health and performance clinic

21 September 2018

A recent rebrand has transformed one of the University of Auckland’s clinics as it moved from the Tāmaki Campus to new state-of-the-art premises on the Newmarket Campus.

The Health and Rehabilitation Clinic – formerly known as the Health and Performance Clinic – has settled into a purpose built facility in Building 907, Suiter Street, and clinic director, Stacey Reading says the new space is outstanding operates on a “by appointment” basis.

Although the equipment may be the same as in a standard gym, Stacey advises that the clinic is not a regular gym.

“We are an exercise rehabilitation service, embedded in an internationally accredited postgraduate teaching programme, which specialises in helping people manage their long-term chronic health conditions.

“Our clients include those who have, or have experienced, heart disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, neurological diseases or other chronic conditions.”

Stacey says that prior to the move and rebrand, the clinic offered a standard 12-week exercise programme.

“Now we work with clients initially over three to four appointments to develop unique programmes suited to their individual needs,” he explains.

In some cases, programmes span six sessions aimed at teaching the client how to complete their exercises while monitoring appropriateness and safety, so they may undertake their exercise programme at home, or in their favourite gym.

In other cases, clients elect to undertake regular supervised sessions under expert guidance within the clinic for several weeks.

“Our aim is to help our clients regain their health and confidence so that they can enjoy leisure-time physical activity to maintain a health lifestyle," Stacey says.

Note: The clinic offers a 25% discount on all services for University of Auckland staff.
